BIOGRAPHY

Born in 1980 in Cuba, Ruben FUENTES is a Spanish contemporary artist who lives and works in Paris.

Fuentes is an extremely talented artist whose powerful and unique work is recognised in France and abroad. He graduated from the Fine Arts Institute of Havana before receiving his masters and PhD from the University of Valencia.

Fuentes’s works are in multiple public collections, his work can be found in the Museum of Hunting and Nature in Paris as well as in private galleries in the USA, Cuba, Switzerland and Spain. Since 2004, he has participated in numerous groups and organised multiple solo exhibitions in France, Spain, Switzerland, Cuba and the USA.

"He paints in Chinese ink, acrylic and oil paint. His mental landscapes, distinctly different from any photographic reality, bring together impressions and memories summarised through an unrealistic representation of nature and its inhabitants. Thus, Rubén Fuentes devotes himself to the illustration of an anthropomorphic nature, of an animalistic personification of the landscape (...) upholstered with vegetation.
Rubén Fuentes’s artistic approach to landscape is, above all, oriental. His style belongs to the Chinese Shanshui genre, because the artist’s works appropriate the rejection of pictorial illusionism in favour of the re-transcription of thoughts and sensations born through the contemplation of nature.
The techniques of the artist also closely resemble each other. Pomo, the Chinese broken ink technique, and hatsuboku, Japanese-style splattered ink, constitute the starting point of the artist’s work. Nature is omnipresent in Fuentes’s art in which the symbiosis of art and nature is reached by the spontaneity of the artist’s gesture, the minuteness of the details and the balanced management of the full and empty. The swirling foliage punctuates the artworks, (...) presenting the viewer with original, unique and fascinating aesthetics. "
