BIOGRAPHY

Charles ARTUS (1897-1978) had an astounding personality, despite considered a misanthropist, he was always noted to be loyal and sincere to the people he valued. Therefore, whilst he mostly committed himself to isolation, he never lacked good company.

A native to Normandy, he arrived in Paris to become a student of Navellier. Their close relationship lasted a lifetime and it was in his studio, ‘Rue Royer Collard’, that he discovered the pleasure of morphological study. The impressive menagerie kept by Navellier at his studio was what sparked Artus’ interest in the observation of live animals.

Artus enjoyed frequenting the ‘Jardin des Plantes’ in Paris, it was there where he would meet François Pompon. Henceforth, they collaborated intimately throughout many years, leading Artus to be one of the founding members of the famous ‘’Groupe des Douze’’. He would later remain to be Pompon’s personal and permanent secretary throughout the whole existence of the group.

Artus had set himself free from the realistic style taught by Navellier to learn and follow from Pompon’s footsteps. Artus wanted to reach the “essential” and ‘volume’ was what he had in mind.

However Artus’ work was clearly unique, he gave his animal’s stark attitudes and a style that characterised them exceptionally. His work soon generated the admiration and respect of all, starting nonetheless with Pompon himself.

Strongly inspired by birds, Artus’ works are both especially broad and diversified. He resisted the exotic trend of the 1930’s, dedicating himself to France’s countryside animals; wild and domestic.
The likes of donkeys, hens and turkeys were more frequent subjects than compared to monkeys or other bizarre creatures.

By 1920, Artus’ work exhibited in all the major salons. He received state commissions as well as favours from the great art collectors at the time, The art-world was enchanted by his work throughout the rest of his life.

Artus is thus considered as an Inter-War period Animal sculptor whose stylistics is similar to that of Pompon, yet his sufficient originality makes him not to be considered as a student or a follower of a style, but a pioneer.

Major French and Foreign museums now own Charles Artus’ artworks. One may see his art pieces among the collections of the National Modern Art Museum of Paris, Museums of: Rouen, Vernon, Gien, Boulogne, Poitiers, Mont de Marsan, the Metropolitan Museum of New York, the Museums of: Philadelphia, Tokyo, Toronto, Ottawa, Luxembourg and many others...

Since he passed away, his reputation has kept increasing and he now belongs amongst the greatest sculptors of his time. His legacy remains alongside with Bugatti, Pompon, Guyot and Sandoz.
